TAS Internships
The TAS Summer Internship
Internships offer critical opportunities for young people to learn professional practices and habits for success in the workplace. Through the summer internship program, the TASs work in summer school in the morning and engage in learning opportunities in the afternoon.
The internship runs Monday through Thursday for six weeks from 8:30 – 4:00 p.m. TASs attend class sessions with students, run 90-minute small group tutoring sessions, meet with teachers to plan and debrief, and prepare materials for their tutoring sessions. Afternoon sessions include literacy workshops, college tours, college-readiness activities, yoga and meditation techniques for test-taking, and information about STEM majors and careers.
The summer interns are made up of rising 10th, and rising 11th grade students from PERC schools who have completed one year of TAS service. TAS interns must have an average of 70 in math and/or science and a score of 75 or higher on the Regents exam in the course for which they are TASs. In addition, they must demonstrate an interest in the content area, good communications skills, and a sensitivity to others.
The Internship Program is competitive. Fewer than 20% of the TASs who apply are accepted into the program.
PERC has partnered with College Now and Harlem Biospace to offer other exciting summer internship possibilities to motivated TASs.

The HYPOTHEkids Maker Lab at Harlem Biospace
Target TAS: For All Qualified TAS
The Hk Maker Lab is an intense six-week summer program to learn the foundations of design. Focusing on addressing a global health problem, the students will prototype and test a biomedical device and develop an associated business plan. The program will culminate in a presentation to leading executives from the biomedical community. The Hk Maker Lab projects will then be incubated using the state-of-the-art facilities at Harlem Biospace. This program will launch this summer.
Extremely motivated students will gain incredible “Maker” skills after this intense curriculum and who will in turn become student leaders of such programs in their college work.
